ERVA report outlines engineering priorities for precision nutrition
The Engineering Research Visioning Alliance (ERVA),
an initiative funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, has released a new report outlining
how engineering research could help transform U.S. food systems and advance precision nutrition.
Engineering Food Systems to Enable Precision Nutrition identifies nine priority research areas
aimed at translating biological insights into practical technologies and systems that can improve
nutrition and public health. The report focuses on three broad areas: food-as-medicine approaches
to disease prevention; enabling technologies such as smart packaging and circular-economy systems;
and technologies that can address nutrition insecurity and expand access to nutrient-dense local foods.
Across these areas, ERVA also identifies foundational needs in sensors and devices, materials and
functional food systems, and data integration and system coordination. Together, the research
priorities are intended to support food systems that are more precise, resilient and capable of
delivering measurable health benefits at scale.
ERVA is funded by the NSF Directorate for Engineering and
brings together experts across disciplines to help identify emerging national engineering research
priorities.
