The purpose of the Engineering Research Visioning Alliance (ERVA) is to help the United States stay at the forefront of technological discovery, research and innovation — and maintain its leadership in the global economy.
ERVA was created to provide the engineering community with a process for identifying bold and societally impactful engineering research directions that will place the US in a leading position to realize a better future for all. It is an engaged, inclusive, multilayered partnership, providing a diverse array of voices with the opportunity to impact national research priorities. ERVA brings the engineering community together to envision high-impact solutions to society’s grand challenges and to spark new research directions for a more secure and sustainable world.
Funded with up to $8 million from the NSF, ERVA will work to connect the national engineering community, including people and organizations in academia, government and industry, as well as professional organizations and the interested public. Building on community ideas, ERVA will share compelling visions for future engineering research to address national needs and societal challenges, leading to positive impacts on people’s lives.
The core partners of ERVA are members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance; the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR)/Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Foundation (EIF); and the University Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP). The American Society for Engineering Education and other affiliate partners will provide important connections beyond these core groups.
Professional societies and associations with aligned goals have a role to play in ERVA and may become ERVA Affiliate Partners. Individuals are also invited to participate as ERVA Champions, especially those with an interest in the future of engineering research, including the general public; students at all levels; researchers, faculty and deans in small and large college engineering programs; and interested parties in the industry, from engineers to CEOs.
Those interested can get involved with ERVA and learn about its upcoming visioning activities at www.ERVAcommunity.org and follow @ERVAcommunity and the hashtag #ERVAcommunity on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
Nominate ERVA Event Participants: Role of Engineering in Addressing Climate Change
EIN, a core partner and leader of the Engineering Research Visioning Alliance (ERVA), invites you to nominate faculty for ERVA's first visioning event. This NSF-funded initiative is charged with convening experts across a range of disciplines to collaboratively identify bold and transformative new engineering research directions. ERVA visioning events are a unique opportunity for selected participants to advance the ERVA goal of catalyzing the pursuit of innovative, high-impact research that benefits society. Its first visioning event will be held virtually Dec 7-8, and ERVA is identifying leading researchers to explore The Role of Engineering in Addressing Climate Change. ERVA All-Hands Meeting Recording Available
On June 11, 2021, ERVA convened the Executive Committee, Advisory Board, Standing Council, Work Group leadership, and other key stakeholders to discuss roles, responsibilities, and immediate activities at its inaugural All-Hands Meeting. Participants heard from NSF partners and ERVA leadership about expectations and strategic direction. In breakout sessions with the Standing Council and Advisory Board, participants provided insight and contributed to discussions. It was an exciting time to think big and make strong connections with others who have pledged their time, energy, and thoughtful guidance to activate the ERVA mission. More
