“New Mexico produces more than twice the national average of greenhouse gas emissions per capita. New Mexicans produce over 50 tons per person per year, while the average in the United States is 18 tons per person per year.” — NM Climate Strategy 2020

Burning fossil fuels for electricity creates vast amounts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These emissions add to the rate of global temperature rise.

New Mexico is already an arid state that is experiencing prolonged drought and longer fire seasons because of a changing climate.

Transitioning to energy sources that limit GHG emissions can provide time to develop responses and adaptation technologies.
