In that role, he continues to direct some of the external projects that he initiated as Vice President for Research. These include the $3.8 billion contract from the U.S. Department of Energy to manage and operate the Savannah River National Lab, the $20 million NSF EPSCoR RII Track-1 grant (Materials and Design Excellence in South Carolina, MADE in SC) and the National EPSCoR/IDeA Foundation Board chairmanship. The change in role change also enables him to spend more time on his research and oversight of the two NIH-funded research centers on inflammation that he currently directs – NIH Center of Research Excellence in Inflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases and the NIH COBRE Center for Dietary Supplement and Inflammation. From 2005 through 2011, he served as Associate Dean at the UofSC School of Medicine Columbia.
