Search Underway for New Director of NIGMS' Center for Research Capacity Building

It is something that no one in the IDeA community has ever wanted to contemplate, but alas, the outstanding leader of the Center for Research Capacity Building (CRCB) at the National Institutes for General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), Fred Taylor, has announced his plans to retire.  Therefore, NIH has begun the process of searching for a new CRCB Director. The announcement, job description and details about the application process are included below. Please note that, "NIGMS will be accepting applications from Monday, October 2, 2017 and plans to have the position open for at least 45 days, but the application process will not close until a candidate has been selected."

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director for the Center for Research Capacity Building (CRCB). The Center for Research Capacity Building (CRCB) supports research, research training, faculty development and research infrastructure improvements in states that historically have not received significant levels of research funding from NIH. It also supports faculty research development at institutions that have a historical mission focused on serving students from underrepresented groups, and conducts a science education program designed to improve life science literacy. CRCB is composed of four programs: Institutional Development Award (IDEA), Science Education Partnership Awards (SEPA), Support of Competitive Research (SCORE), and Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH).

These programs support research and provide resources for research infrastructure enhancement and capacity-building in the basic biomedical sciences and related clinical sciences to enhance the competitiveness and diversity of the biomedical research workforce. To that end, CRCB supports developmental programs that seek to increase the research competitiveness of faculty at institutions that have an explicit historical mission focused on training and graduating students from underrepresented groups. CRCB programs support capacity building, student and faculty enhancement and research pertinent to and selected by the American Indian/Alaska Native Tribal Communities as well as support educational activities that enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical and clinical research needs. In FY 2017, the Center for Research Capacity Building had a budget of about $360 million and is the only Center among six scientific divisions within the NIGMS. The Center is comprised of 10 scientific staff members who serve as program officers. The Center Director reports to the NIGMS Director and is a member of the NIGMS senior leadership team, which helps set policies and priorities for the Institute.

This position offers important opportunities to set scientific priorities, lead change and improve the research enterprise.

Qualifications: Candidates must possess an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree in a field relevant to the position. The ideal candidate will have considerable research experience, broad spectrum of basic, clinical and translational biomedical research including the conditions that disproportionately affect medically underserved populations and knowledge related to the NIGMS mission. In addition, candidates should possess recognized research management and leadership abilities. A strong understanding of biology, chemistry and the biomedical sciences is desired. The position will be filled under a Title 42 (f) excepted service appointment.

Salary/Benefits: Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid. A full package of Federal Civil Service benefits is available, including: retirement, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401K equivalent). The successful candidate is subject to a background investigation and financial disclosure requirements.
