Vice President for Research and Creative Scholarship, University of Montana
Scott L. Whittenburg is the Vice President for Research and Creative Scholarship at the University of Montana. He came to UM from the University of New Orleans in January of 2013 where he was the Vice President for Research and Economic Development. Dr. Whittenburg received a B.S. in Chemistry from Oregon State University in 1974 and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Utah in 1979. Following graduation he started as an Assistant Professor at the University of New Orleans. His research interests are in applications of highly parallel computing systems to computer simulations and modeling of small molecule, biomolecules and magnetic systems.
As Vice President for Research and Creative Scholarship and Dean of the Graduate School at UM Dr. Whittenburg serves many roles. In addition to overseeing the research and scholarly enterprise and directing the Graduate School he serves as the director of federal relations and manages the entrepreneurial and economic development initiatives of the campus. These initiatives support Dr. Whittenburg’s goal of helping the university become a Carnegie Research Very High institution while providing economic and workforce development for Western Montana.
