Charles Wood, University Professor and Lewis Lehr/3M Distinguished Professor Biological Sciences, is internationally known for his work on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Kaposi’s sarcoma associated herpesvirus. He was a member of a research team in a pharmaceutical company that developed the first HIV diagnostic test. He research focused on the routes and factors that affected mother-to-child transmission in developing countries with a high infection rate of these viruses. He is the founding Director of the Nebraska Center for Virology. As leader of the effort he pulled together a team of virologists to submit the largest-ever National Institutes of Health grant awarded to the State of Nebraska. He has served on a number of advisory panels for the National Institute of Health. He has won the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Researcher Award. He has published over 140 articles, book chapters and reviews on his research. Wood received his bachelor degrees in Microbiology and Chemistry from the University of Kansas and his PhD degree in Microbiology from Columbia University.
